To get to Bol involves a rollercoaster local bus ride over the mountains in the middle of the island. The journey is probably only about 20k as the crow flies, but almost 40k with all the twists and turns as we go up to 500m and down again. Some of the views are quite spectacular, and we also get a little look at island life as we stop in all the local villages.
When we get off the bus in Bol we are met by one or two of
the locals renting rooms. The first guy
we talk to won’t take us for just two days, but passes us to his mate who
will. The rates are pretty reasonable,
and it turns out to be a two bedroom apartment which is far better than
anything we expected. It is only a few
minutes from the beach, and from the centre of town, but it is to the beach
first for Dorota. While she settles
there I walk back up to the town and get lunch.
It’s a very small town, mostly centred on a tiny little harbour with a
few cafes and restaurants around it. A
few businesses seem to be closed already for winter, making finding lunch
slightly trickier, but not too much so.
The rest of the day is spent on the beach, or walking along
the coast, while in the evening we go to a restaurant recommended to us by our
landlord. This restaurant is up a hill
away from the main town, and seems to be more local, which of course means it
is cheaper and better than any meal we have had so far. As well as all the free salad we can eat, the
owner also gives us an after dinner drink on the house, and when we ask where
is still open to buy a bottle of water, we get a free one of those as well.
