After checking out we get a local bus back to the bus
station (we aren’t walking again) and then we get a bus to Split. This journey
is a bit longer than we hoped as it is a slow bus stopping frequently, but it
does give us a great sea view of the Dalmatian coast. This has to be one of the great coast roads,
with island after island of all shapes and sizes just across the water. In fact one of the most spectacular bits was
the one part with no islands, just because that was so unusual.
Split itself is a much bigger town than Zadar, but the bus
eventually gets through the traffic to the bus station, where we are greeted by
all the old women looking to rent out rooms.
We get one that is pretty decent and central, and then we begin to
explore the town. First up a trip to the
beach, and then a trip to the old town, which is all built in the ruins of the
palace of a Roman Emperor. It is all
pretty cool, although a bit confusing with all the small streets.
After that, and some failed shopping experiences, we go for
a walk up a hill overlooking the town in the hope of seeing another spectacular
sunset, but the trees in the forest get in the way, so we go back to town for a
pizza in a highly recommended restaurant before going back to our lodgings. Unfortunately we didn’t see that it was under
some sort of youth club when we were checking in, so we have to put up with them
practicing some sort of folk dancing as we try to get to sleep (ok we were
going to bed slightly early, but these after school activities seem to go on
much later than in the UK).
